CHRLES DICKENS: pioneered the serial publication of social narrative fiction denouncing the problem of child labor juvenile crime.

Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812. He was the second child of eight. His father was imprisoned for debts and he was sent to work in a factory for many years. Dickens began to study at nighttime when, at the age of fifteen, he found a job as an office boy at a lawyer's. He was married to Catherine Hogart in 1835 and they had ten children. His novels pioneered the serial publication of social narrative fiction, which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication. Children are often the most important characters in his novels. The most important novels are "Sketches by Boz", "A Christmas Carol", "Hard Times" and "Oliver Twist". 

"Oliver Twist" is a novel. It was published in monthly installments from 1837 to 1839. It is the first example of English social novel. The protagonist is a nine-year-old orphan, Oliver Twist, born in a workhouse and sold into apprenticeship in a textile factory with an undertaker. The conditions were very bad and the food was scarce. After escaping, Oliver travels to London, where he meets the "Artful Dodger", a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal, Fagin. Dickens with this novel wants to explore the important topics of the English industrial revolution such us child labour and social injustice.
